Bend in the Road - Lesson 2 - Walking in Truth
The ways of God's providence towards us are right; And all will be well done and in order.
Christ is a Foundation Stone to some,
To others a Stone of stumbling, and a Rock of offence.
The same sun softens wax and hardens clay.
May we learn to walk in the right ways of God,
as His righteous servants,
and may none of us be disobedient and unbelieving,
and stumble at the word.
As we Walk in Truth.
1Peter 2:7-8, ‘Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.’
We are in this room,
So I have reason to believe we have not rejected the rock.
Do we stumble at His word?
And are we disobedient at times?
So when we are disobedient we are not walking with God,
We are not walking on the path He appointed for us.
Hosea 14:9 ‘Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.’
Walking in truth,
I believe to mean walking in righteousness and acknowledging Him,
Sometimes we want to take shortcuts, don’t we?
What about with our loved ones salvations,
Or with our children’s growth.
We expect them to grow quicker than us.
We want them to not stumble over objects that we trip over.
Do we love them through this growth?
Do we get mad at them?
Do we give them ultimatums to spur along their growth?
Ephesians 5:2, ‘And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.’
The world tells us that we need to make ourselves happy.
And we start to think we have sacrificed long enough.
What does this verse have to say about that?
Before we were saved we truly served ourselves.
We did things to manipulate situations to give us the desired outcome.
Hopefully we do that less now.
But now we have seen the light.
We have seen the wisdom and teaching of God.
Therefore we should walk a little different.
The world needs to se that we are not slaves to our flesh.
But we are free servants.
Ephesians 5:8, ‘For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:’
So how should we walk as children?
The world is not as kind to children as it used to be.
We used to be able to play outside all day long,
As long as we were home when the streetlights came on.
If we did something wrong as children the neighbors told our parents.
I can only imagine how peer pressure is now.
A thirteen year old girl of today is what I remember a sixteen year old being.
What about our own peer pressure?
Are we training our children properly?
Are setting the right example for them?
Ephesians 5:15, ‘See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,’
Circumspectly, I think of the word circumference,
Meaning the perimeter of a circle.
We are to walk around the situation,
Look at it from all angles,
And decide if it is truly of the Lord.
What advice would you have for us to walk in this manner?
So we need to not walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
So I think we can use that as a measuring stick during our decision making process.
Romans 8:1, ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.’
To live with no condemnation,
No disapproval,
No criticism,
No blame.
Maybe we should hang that one on our fridge?
Here is another verse that adds another dimension to that same thought.
Galatians 5:16, ‘This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.’
We try to walk in the spirit,
We also have to admit we are sinners.
What can we do to sin less today than we did yesterday?
Are we controlled by what we see?
Or by what we believe?
2Corinthians 5:7, ‘(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)’
That is, our condition here in this world is such,
That we cannot see God face to face, but by faith only;
While we are in the body, we do not see and enjoy, but believe and expect.
Faith is the thing in expectation: sight is the thing in fruition;
faith is a cloudy discovery of things at a distance;
sight is a clear view and apprehension of things that are present.
We need to learn three things:
That faith is for earth, and sight is for heaven.
That till we have sight, it is a great advantage that we have faith.
That if we now have faith, we may be well assured that we shall have sight.
