Communicating God's Way - Lesson 2 - How Does God Communicate
This chapter should probably be called, “Listening to God,” or “Hearing from God.” I believe we know how He communicates. He has communicated to us in His Word. Since it is His ‘Living Word’, He is still communicating to us.So I believe this Lesson will be on training our ears and our heart to make sure that we are listening properly.
Luke 11:28, “But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
Man on the Mountain
This man was newly saved and he was on fire for the Lord. He was running all over town telling everyone what he had recently learned. This town was the town that the author Mark Twain lived in. This newly saved man ran up to Mark Twain and told him that he was going to climb the highest mountain he could find and shout out the Ten Commandments. Mark Twain thought for a quick moment and stated, ‘Why don’t you stay right here in town and live them?’
“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.” I don’t believe that the newly saved man in that story had bad intentions, but Mark Twain’s words were very true. I believe that the newly saved man was going to the top of a mountain to shout the Ten Commandments because he wanted to.
I do not know if he heard the word of God wrong. Or if he didn’t give time to listen.
Can anyone relate to that?
God told me to . . .
Do you like when people say that? ‘God told me to go to the top of a mountain.’ ‘God told me to do this…’ ‘God told me to do that…’
How do you feel about comments like that?
Where Are My Glasses?
A door-to-door salesman asked this old woman if she owned a copy of the Bible. "I certainly do!" She replied with some pride. To his next question, did she read it regularly, she responded, "Oh, yes!" and sent her little grand—daughter to get the Bible from the house.
As she showed it to the man, her spectacles fell from between the pages. Without thinking, she exclaimed, "Oh, here are my glasses! I've been looking for these for years!"
So how does God communicate to us? That’s right through his word. Even when we are unable to understand what He is telling us He is still sharing. Even when we cannot comprehend what His will is for us He is still sharing. Even when we have ignored Him for days He is still sharing.
Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
God reveals Himself through His Word. Has He ever told you something that seemed incomprehensible?
Psalm 103: 11, “For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”
Grace is when God gives us something we do not deserve. Mercy is when God does not give us something we deserve. Like when I am thinking something I shouldn’t be in the car and He should run me into a telephone pole.
Can you share a testimony of God’s mercy that has been showered down upon you?
John 16:12, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.”
I want to know now. God what do you want me to do? I have all these ideas. I’m sure we all do. We have dreams of helping homeless people. He have desires to counsel with young girls as they are going through a pregnancy alone. We want to help children who have parents who either emotionally abuse them or physically abuse them.
The Lord has a will for our lives. In the smaller matters like blessing food to our bodies. Larger matters like who we are going to marry. The Lord already knows where we are going to be in a year, in 5 years and beyond.
I want to know now. “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.”
Story Time
You have a daughter who is going away on a mission trip. In three months, she will be going away to witness to the lost on some far away part of the world. It is safe and chaperoned everything is paid for. She will need some spending money for the week. Do you give her the spending money now? Let us say it is $ 300.00. Do you give it to her and say, ‘Now hold onto this money. It is for your trip. Put it in a safe spot.’
Of course not. She cannot bear that responsibility now.
John 16:12, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.”
Has the Lord ever spoken to you in this manner? Can you share it with us?
Isaiah 55:10,11, “For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the things whereto I sent it.”
God’s Word does not return void. If He reveals a part of His will to you we should not ignore it. We should pray for the Lord to help us understand it. We should pray for the Lord to guide our steps on the path he spells out.
When I read those verses, it reminds me that God speaks to us to reveal His will for our lives. That He is not merely some genie in a bottle that we can make wishes to.
When you read those verses, does anything speak to you?
In our Discipleship book Lesson 5 ‘The Word of God’ it says the following …
The very words of God are more sure than the audible voice of God. This is a very critical point. It must be understood that all “experiences” are to be judged by an infallible standard, which is greater than any experience. Peter said the Word of God was MORE SURE than the physical appearance and audible voice of God.
II Peter 1:16-21, “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
Have you ever opened the Bible and read the exact words you needed to hear at that exact moment?
Matthew 4:4, “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
My study Bible states the following about this verse, ‘His source of strength was obedience to the Father’s will and He would not even work a miracle to avoid personal suffering when such suffering was a part of God’s purpose for Him.’
What does this verse say to you?
2 Samuel 22:31, “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.”
This verse is stated again in Psalm 18:30, word for word. The word of the Lord is proven: he is our shield.
How does His word protect you?
Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
How has God’s word seen through you?
In Conclusion
Psalms 1:1-3, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
In Constant Communication
Think about the Secret Service Agents as the guard the President. They have that earpiece and talk into the buttons on their shirt. At the other end of the earpiece is someone who is running the show. Probably someone with a better vantage point and can alert the agents to people or things they might not be able to see themselves. That earpiece goes everywhere with the agent, and whenever he is on duty, that two-way receiver is on.
I think that is how Christians are supposed to stay in contact with God. A follower of Christ is always alert, listening, and mindful of our assignment.
In addition to our constant communication with God, we are to spend regular periods of time in focused, one-on one interaction with our Creator.
God did not instruct us to pray because He needs our advice. He does not ask us to pray so that we might tell Him something He does not already know. He instructs us to pray so that our hearts, our minds, and our actions might be yielded to His perfect will.
In prayer God takes us, who’s hearts are prone to wander, and guides us in the path of righteousness for His own name’s sake. When we discipline ourselves to pray regularly, we will grow in godliness.
